Dollhouse on a Budget: 10 Miniature Supplies you (maybe) didn't Think Of!

Working on miniatures is all about precision, creativity, and a little bit of patience... but having the right tools makes everything easier (and more fun)! Here’s a list of ten "less-obvious" tools I swear by...

1. Paint Roller - a paint roller might sound like overkill for miniatures, but trust me, it’s perfect for covering large surfaces quickly. Use it for walls, floors, or any area where you need a smooth, even coat. Smaller rollers work best for tiny spaces, and you’ll save yourself a ton of time compared to brushing everything by hand.
2. Sponge
- dampen it with water and use it to make cardstock more flexible, perfect for shaping or folding without tearing. You can also use it as a soft surface for dotting tools or awls when punching holes or shaping delicate pieces. It’s a versatile little helper you’ll reach for often.

3. Eyepins - eyepins are tiny, but they do big jobs. Think of them as miniature screws or pegs. You can bend them into hooks, skewers, or even kitchen utensils for dollhouse scenes. They’re a tiny detail that can make your miniatures look so much more realistic.
4. Gel Pens -
perfect for fine details. I use them for lettering, adding tiny accents, or touching up paint where brushes just can’t reach. They’re precise, smooth, and come in a ton of colors... don’t underestimate these little pens!

5. Binder Clips - more than office supplies... they’re essential for miniature makers. Use them to hold pieces together while painting or as clamps to keep glued parts in place until they dry. They’re strong, reusable, and save a lot of frustration.
6. Mini Magnets
- such are a game-changer! They’re perfect for making removable doors, shutters, or walls that snap together. They make your miniature furniture and buildings more interactive, and they keep everything in place without permanent glue.

7. Mini Hinges - another must-have for functional miniatures. They’re perfect for doors, cabinets, or any piece you want to open and close. Even tiny dollhouses benefit from a little hinge magic - it adds realism and playability!
8. 3D Paint
 - one of my favorite tools for adding texture and finishing touches. Use it to create raised details, faux piping, or even to smooth over small imperfections and holes. It’s an easy way to add depth and detail without a lot of extra work.

9. Floral Wire - flexible, sturdy, and comes in many colors. Make miniature flower stems, railings, or structural supports. You can even shape it for tiny fences or supports in furniture!
10. Paper Punches
- perfect for creating tiny shapes quickly. I love using them to make little plants, flowers, or decorations from paper. They save a ton of cutting time, and the shapes are always consistent.
