Making Of: Miniature Raskog Cart (DIY Video)

Simplystella Sketchbook

Come promesso, ecco il video "making of" del mio carrello Raskog in miniatura! giggle
As promised, here's the making of video for my miniature Ikea Raskog cart! giggle

I felt like some of the steps were not very clear in the video - so I compiled an additional list of instructions and tips that you can find below smile

Simplystella Sketchbook
For the cart's legs, I used wooden skewers - the kind you would normally use with food! I cut the skewers into 10 pieces: 4 were 12cm long, 2 were 7cm long, and finally 4 were 2cm long. To make sure that the pieces had an even lenght, I tied them together with repositionable tape and sanded them with fine sand paper.

At first, I made the "curved" part of the legs with polymer clay. However, I later realized they were not sturdy enough to hold the cart structure - so I suggest you actually skip this step and glue the wooden sticks to each other, using PVA glue.

Simplystella Sketchbook
Once the skewers are glued together, you can file the corners to make them appear rounded. I glued the legs in four "groups": two included the 7cm long horizontal stick, the other two didn't.

Simplystella Sketchbook
For the cart's baskets, I went for my usual recycled-cardstock-glued-in-layers method. The original Raskog cart has mesh-like shelves, but I was afraid that a "hollow" base wasn't sturdy enough, so I made them solid instead.

Simplystella Sketchbook
For the baskets edges, I used regular mid-weight cardstock. Tip: spray the cardstock with a little water before you start glueing it to the base. It will bend more easily, following the curved shape of the base nicely.

Once the baskets were ready, I traced two lines on the back of each one - measuring 2,2cm from each side. These were the guidelines that later helped me to correctly place the cart's legs.

I glued the legs to the baskets using PVA glue - this step required a bit of patience, since PVA glue takes a good while to dry.  I place two additional skewers beneath the baskets to prevent them from moving/sliding while the glue was drying.

At this point, I connected the four "groups" of legs to one another...

...and, again, sanded the corners to make them rounded.

Once the structure of the cart was done, I covered it with a generous layer of acrylic gesso to get an uniform color. The use of gesso also makes the structure a lot more sturdy!

Next, I painted the cart with acrylic paints, and coated it with Glossy Accents and clear nail polish. Tip: you know how, when nail polish is old, it gets all thick and sticky and takes forever to dry? Well, don't throw it away... it's just perfect to gloss your miniature furniture! giggle

For the wheels, I used polymer clay. First, I made a model, baked it, and used it to make a mold; then, I made the actual wheels.

Simplystella Sketchbook
I drew the template of the casters on regular medium weight cardstock...

Simplystella Sketchbook
To achieve a realistic metallic finish, I used kitchen foil. Simply glue the cardstock to the foil! I used a sticker maker - this is ideal - but if you don't have one, you can use glue tape. Just make sure the whole surface of the cardstock is covered in glue!

Simplystella Sketchbook
I glued the wheels to the "metal" piece, then I pierced a tiny hole in the center with a thin drill and inserted a pin, securing it with a drop of Glossy Accents.

Simplystella Sketchbook
Finally, I glued the casters to the cart using, once again, Glossy Accents gel glue. Tip: you might want to use a clamp to hold the cart in place while the glue is drying!
